Overview

Detection along the whole run - not just one point

The cable's heat-reactive core triggers the instant any point along its length reaches the rated temperature.

Flagship Product

Linear Heat Detection Cable

Non-Resettable Digital Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHS / LHDC)

Best suited for

  • Harsh or corrosive environments unsuitable for spot detectors
  • Areas with restricted or hazardous access for maintenance
  • Long, linear risks where point-detector density would be cost-prohibitive

Operating principle

  • Each core is insulated with a heat-reactive polymer formulated to plasticize at a defined trigger temperature.
  • When the trigger temperature is reached at any point along the cable, the two cores make contact and send a signal to the control panel.
  • Connected to a Digital Interface with Distance Location Display, the system can report the distance (in metres) to the hot spot along the cable run.
  • Because detection is continuous along the full length, long single zones can be installed while still resolving small, localized hot spots.

Why it stands out

FeatureBenefit
Heat-sensitive polymer insulationTriggers precisely at the rated alarm temperature
Industrial-grade outer jacketWithstands chemicals, moisture and abrasion
Continuous linear coverageDetects hot spots anywhere along the run, not just at fixed points
Compatible with suppression systemsIntegrates with alarm panels and extinguishing systems via an EOL unit
Distance-location capabilityPinpoints the hot spot's location when paired with a digital interface

Cable construction

  • Twisted-pair, twin-core cable construction.
  • Each core uses a trimetallic conductor with a special heat-reactive polymer insulation.
  • Can be wired as a simple switch to operate a relay directly, but in most installations the circuit is monitored for open-circuit (disconnection) via an End-of-Line (EOL) unit and a fire alarm channel.

Installation considerations

  • Circuit is typically monitored for open-circuit using an End-of-Line (EOL) unit wired to a fire alarm channel.
  • Installation is straightforward but benefits from professional guidance to ensure system reliability and code compliance (see FAQ).
  • Confirm compatibility with your fire alarm / suppression panel before specifying - most panels are compatible, but this should be verified per project.

Applications

Where continuous heat detection matters

Our Linear Heat Detection Cable is specified wherever a fire or overheat risk runs along a length - a tray, a conveyor, a tunnel - rather than sitting at one fixed point.

How It Works

Watch it trigger, step by step

Click a stage to see how the cable behaves from standby through to alarm.

01 - Circuit at rest

The heat-reactive polymer keeps the twin cores separated. The circuit reads as a closed loop with no fault - the system is armed and monitoring.

STANDBY ALARM

02 - Polymer plasticizes

As the cable surface reaches its rated alarm temperature, the insulating polymer softens at that exact point along the run.

STANDBY ALARM

03 - Signal to panel

The two cores make contact and send a signal to the control panel - with a distance interface, the panel reports how far along the cable the hot spot sits.

STANDBY ALARM

Linear vs. point coverage

Two ways to detect heat - one covers a length, the other only covers itself.

Spot Detector

Coverage only at fixed points - a gap between sensors is a blind spot.

Linear Heat Detection Cable

Continuous coverage along the entire run - no gaps, and the hot spot's location is reported.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It's used for early heat sensing in environments prone to overheating or fire hazards.

No. Once activated, the affected section must be replaced.

Yes, when sourced from quality cable manufacturers with weather-resistant materials.

They offer linear, continuous protection over the entire cable length, rather than detection at a single fixed point.

Power, petrochemicals, transport, logistics and IT infrastructure.

LHS cables come in various temperature ratings depending on the environment and application. Mueller Cables' standard ratings are 68°C, 78°C, 88°C, 110°C, 138°C and 187°C; contact us for other ratings.

Length varies by application; cables are often available in runs of 1,000 metres or more. Mueller Cables' standard supply length is 1500 m ± 0.5% per reel - consult us for project-specific zone lengths.

No - they are threshold devices. They detect when a specific temperature is reached but cannot measure varying temperatures along their length.

Most are compatible, but it is essential to verify compatibility with your suppression panel or fire alarm system in advance.

Installation is not overly complex, but it benefits from professional guidance to ensure system reliability and compliance.
